As we are sure all of you are, TSI is monitoring the news and the developing situation around the COVID-19 virus around the world.

As a TSI supporter, you might wonder how this is affecting our organization and most importantly, the sloths? We wanted to let you know how TSI is staying prepared for the sake of our staff, ‘Slothwalk’ guests and the sloths in our care.

As a non-public facility, TSI is already not open to visitors, so the number of people at TSI on a daily basis is already just staff and volunteers. However, like the rest of the world we are reinforcing our hygiene habits and personal protective equipment (gloves etc). In addition we are encouraging everyone to practice social distancing to reduce the chance of contracting the disease.

At the time of this writing, Costa Rica has 26 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and no deaths. Two-hundred and eighty nine people have tested negative. There are so far no confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Manuel Antonio, where we are located. The government of Costa Rica has ensured free testing and treatment for anyone in Costa Rica that develops the disease and a 24/7 hotline to ask questions if you feel sick. In general, the government of Costa Rica seems to be handling this pandemic well and reassuring visitors and citizens that we will make it through this together.

The #StopAnimalSelfies campaign was created by the MINAE/SINAC offices of the government of Costa Rica in order to educate tourists about the dangers and cruelty surrounding the wildlife photo prop industry.

Wildlife all over the world are facing an extinction crisis caused by habitat destruction and the illicit trade. This illegal trade in wild animals can take on many faces with many places even posing as “rescue centers” or “sanctuaries” pretending to benefit animal welfare. But any place that allows/encourages you to touch, feed, or take selfies with wild animals does not have their best interest in mind.

Luckily, the government of Costa Rica is trying to crack down on this type of animal exploitation by educating tourists to not participate in these kinds of opportunities by asking them to instead take photos with stuffed animals. At the airports in San Jose and Liberia and a few other locations around Costa Rica you can find selfie stations where you can take photos with stuffed sloths, macaws, turtles etc and learn more about this initiative.

TSI was so excited when we were asked to join this campaign! Our stuffed mascot, Freedom, who has been taking selfies with tourists for a couple of years now, has many new stuffed animal friends to help spread the message to #StopAnimalSelfies and to #SayNoToSlothSelfies

Three years ago this month, The Sloth Institute officially partnered with Toucan Rescue Ranch and launched the Saving Sloths Together rescue program. We are honored to have such an experienced rescue partner that has been saving animals in Costa Rica since 2004! They have helped us grow as an organization and fulfill TSI’s own mission to save more sloths.

The Saving Sloths Together (SST) rescue program is a joint effort between The Sloth Institute (TSI) and Toucan Rescue Ranch (TRR). The program launched in 2017 when the two organizations realized they needed each other in order to provide full circle care to rescued sloths.

Learn more about Saving Sloths Together and you too can join us to save more sloths!

Enjoy this story by guest blogger, Kevin Grinnell, owner of Slothgrip. He recently visited TSI and donated climbing rope used in climbing gyms for use as new sloth speedways.

In late 2017 I was getting ready to open a sloth-themed shop for rock climbers who care about conservation. I sent an email to The Sloth Institute with a bit of an odd question — were there any sloths interested in being a sponsored athlete on our climbing team?

Rather than calling me crazy, we began emailing back and forth finding new ways to work together. When we started to design patches that send profits to specific initiatives, Sloth Speedways was the perfect first project to support. Climbers loved the idea of helping sloths and other wildlife keep climbing, and we sold the patches through Etsy and at events, always excited to see the updates from the team.

Earlier this year Marie Macaspac (TSI’s Chief Marketing & Development Officer) had an idea – what if we used climbing rope for the Speedways? If it’s strong enough to protect a climber taking a big fall, it should be strong enough to make a lovely bridge for a sloth. I asked a few local gyms if they had any spare rope for our sloth friends, explaining it would be used to keep them safely connected to shelter and food instead of attempting to cross roads or use power lines. Brooklyn Boulders and The Cliffs were more than happy to pass along rope that was no longer fit for the walls (but still fit for a sloth!) and all of a sudden we had 500 meters of Sloth Speedways.
It seemed the most cost efficient way to bring our new mountain of rope to TSI would be to simply pack some duffel bags and take a trip.
After a fun conversation with customs (“It’s for the sloths…”) I met my friend Joel, who had collected donated rope from Movement Fitness in Colorado. We took the bus to Manuel Antonio, rested for the night and woke up early the next morning to head to The Sloth Institute, where we met Tom and Carlos, Sloth Speedways experts. Tom identified the locations where a pathway was needed due to trimming or new development, Carlos installed and secured the Speedways, and we prepped the climbing rope for hanging.
Together we hung around ten new Speedways, taking a quick break to watch the release of Aladdin after a quick stay with TSI, and left the remaining rope for installation another day.
Looking at the new pathways, I thought about everything that went into this project and couldn’t be more grateful. Thankful for everyone who purchased a patch, helped spread the word, to the gyms who donated the rope, to Joel for carrying a heavy bag on a long trip and to TSI for creating and running such a great initiative. There’s still plenty of work to be done, but in my quest to be more like a sloth, I’m slowing down to appreciate what a wonderful trip this was.

Dolly arrived with injuries from an electrocution when climbing on the cables.

Dolly, a lazy two-fingered sloth, attends every week to an acupuncture appointment where they play spa music and she gets to eat her favorite leaves during the treatment.

After six weeks of somewhat unusual therapy, she is recovering movement of her arm, but her hand still needs a bit more help.

“We are seeing progress, and as long as we want to continue, and Dolly is willing to do so too, the specialist said she will continue to donate her time,” said Sam Trull, the co-founder of the Sloth Institute in Manuel Antonio.

Dolly was discovered with large burns on her body after an electrocution with a transformer, but the damage to her arm was not as deep as in other similar cases.

“Basically the options were to amputate a healthy arm, or find a way for the arm to fully function again,” said Trull, who also cares for sloths abandoned by their mothers or injured by dogs.

In about six months, the animal could be released back into the wild if she responds to the acupuncture treatment recommended by Constant Boshoff of the Rafiki center.

Although acupuncture treatments are relatively new with wild animals, it has already been successful in helping a Congo monkey recover from partial paralysis in the Animal Rescue Zooave.
