The three main reasons why sloths are slow.

three-fingered sloth climbing down

This is probably the main question we get (and why they poop on the ground…stay tuned for that blog).  Stereotypically speaking, sloths are often categorized as lazy and dumb because of their cryptic habits.  In general, we humans, tend to recognize speed and power as the most successful way to go about life.  However, their slow lifestyle is not something to be teased or reviled.  In fact, their slow lifestyle should be celebrated as they have been highly successful (before human encroachment) at living in a rainforest environment.  Their strategy for success is one of deliberate and calculated movements and staying under the radar.  Below are the three main reasons why sloths are slow.

Sloths conserve energy

Sloths have the least muscle mass of any mammal.  They are also herbivores (two-fingered sloths are somewhat omnivorous) which is a diet that doesn't bring in a lot of calories.  Therefore they don’t have a lot of calories to exert or a lot of places to store energy.  By being slow they can save precious energy while searching for their next meal so they don’t get sick or starve to death.

Sloths climb carefully

Sloths are excellent climbers but they can also be a little clumsy.  They are not known for their vision (although three-fingered sloths have much better vision than two-fingered sloths) or their balance.  However, they are extremely flexible and have a strong grip.  By moving slowly through the trees, they are able to plan their travel route more carefully and lessen the chance that they will fall somewhere dangerous.  Sloths are actually great at falling, however if they fall on something hard or pointy (or man made structures) they are more likely to get harmed in the incident.

Sloths need to stay invisible

There aren’t many things more important for sloths than not getting eaten by a predator.  Obviously, that means the end of everything for them.  By being slow, sloths are able to be silent.  We have watched sloths for thousands of hours in the forest and can attest to their ability to stay hidden.  Not only through amazing camouflage skills, but also through their ability to move silently through the forest canopy.  If a predator can't hear them, then they are more likely to not find them.

Deforestation Kills sloths daily in Costa Rica

For all of the reasons that we receive sloths, deforestation is at the root of every displaced or injured sloth. Trees are cut down to make way for homes, business and roads.  With the gaps in the forest connected by electric wires, sloths climb on those wires to get from one tree to another and get electrocuted.  With homes now in their forests, dogs brought by people wander into the forest and attack sloths. If a car doesn’t see a sloth soon enough, they become a victim to traffic accidents. All of these dangers are a daily reality for the sloths that live in Costa Rica and especially in our area, Manuel Antonio.

He was trapped in a concrete jungle...

Recently we rescued a sloth who found himself in a neighborhood “concrete jungle”. He was clearly hungry and in search of food, because by the time we arrived to rescue him, he was clinging to a tiny green sapling that was growing out of the roof of an apartment building. Opportunistically he started eating that sapling because he wasn’t sure where his next meal would be found.

I have seen a lot of horribly sad things including massive trauma inflicted on sloths and other wildlife because of human encroachment into the jungle. But watching this sloth clinging to this tiny sapling and desperately eating from it, might be the saddest thing I have ever seen. Luckily he wasn’t hurt, or in pain in that very moment. But it was still horribly sad because of what that image represents. Sloths, just like all wild animals, never give up on trying to survive. When their habitat changes, they change with it and they search for ways to live within their new reality. Sadly, for sloths living in an urban environment, there is only but so much they can do to adapt.

They will never stop being injured and they will always need our help.

Monster was my greatest inspiration for starting TSI

This week marks 5 years since Monster was attacked and killed by an ocelot.

Monster was my greatest inspiration and my greatest teacher. Many of you may know the story of how she died…but do you remember the details of how she lived? Brave, curious and full of hope

Here is my favorite story about Monster

The day she was released, that night there was a HUGE thunderstorm. It was really bad and being her first night out we were concerned she would panic and have a hard time finding shelter in the storm. I went out at midnight and was able to recapture her and get her back into the release cage to wait out the storm with the intention of arriving back at 6am the next morning to let her back out again, once the storm had passed. So the next morning I got to the release cage, bright and early and there was Monster WAITING at the release door. At no time prior to being released had she ever paid attention to that door, however after being released she clearly knew exactly where it led. I rushed over to the door to open it so she could go back out again. At this point a part of me thought maybe it was a coincidence that she happened to be resting there, but sure enough, as soon as the door opened, Monster climbed out, to take herself back out into the trees!

The forest was exactly where she wanted to be

At that moment I promised her I would never lock her up again… she was meant to be free and the forest was exactly where she wanted to be.

A few months later, she was killed by the ocelot. While tragic and devastating, ocelots are one of the main natural predators for sloths in Manuel Antonio. Monster was unlucky and in “the wrong place at the wrong time”. But after her death I remembered how desperately she wanted her freedom and how happy she was being in the trees where she belonged.

Her desire to be free

Monster was my main inspiration for creating TSI, and without her, I wasn’t sure I could continue the mission. But it was because of her desire to be free that I knew that we couldn’t stop trying to provide that for other sloths. Since then we have rescued and released hundreds of more sloths…I like to think that Monster would be proud.

Thank you for your continued support and for helping TSI save more sloths like Monster to live their best sloth lives in the wild!

Please consider making a donation and support our mission today.

Aretha, a two-fingered sloth, came as a small orphan (only a couple of months old) in November 2017. After going through our complete rehabilitation/release program she was released in Feb 2020.

Since then we have seen her here and there but just in the past few weeks we have caught trap camera footage of her and her new baby!!

We are so excited for Aretha’s successful release and motherhood. This makes the third confirmed baby from one of our released sloths.

After growing up and getting big and strong he was finally ready for release last month!

Since his release, we see him almost every day at his release location foraging for leaves or having a good scratch. We are so happy for Tommy. Help us wish him luck in his new life! 😍

Minutes away from dying, Snow White a juvenile three-fingered sloth, was found on the ground next to a fallen tree and another dead sloth.
Luckily for Snow White she was rushed to us just in time and after many days of critical care, she pulled through!
While we are so happy to see Snow White recovering so well, the sad fact is that sloths, especially juvenile three-fingered sloths, are heavily affected by habitat loss, even small scale habitat loss (because they have such small home ranges when first weaned from mom).

Everywhere within their habitat range, trees are being lost daily. And losing trees = losing sloths.

Donate $35 to provide a new sloth speedway to provide safe travel for sloths

A female two-fingered sloth, Shakira was electrocuted 2 months ago.

Luckily, her burns didn’t impair the function of any of her limbs, but they were still quite severe and covered a large portion of her body including her face, eyes and both hands.

Most of her burns have now healed but one hand is still healing. She is doing so well, we think she should be able to be released next month!

Little Gordita also had a really swollen arm. Luckily, it wasn’t fractured but instead an inflammatory reaction from a tick bite. We’ve never seen such a reaction from a tick bite in a sloth before!
After weeks of loving care, the inflammation is gone and bite area is finally healed. Gordita is eating well and gaining weight, she has already gained almost 200g in less than a month! She will keep learning and growing in our rehabilitation program until she is finally big enough to be released…
