Aretha, a two-fingered sloth, came as a small orphan (only a couple of months old) in November 2017. After going through our complete rehabilitation/release program she was released in Feb 2020.

Since then we have seen her here and there but just in the past few weeks we have caught trap camera footage of her and her new baby!!

We are so excited for Aretha’s successful release and motherhood. This makes the third confirmed baby from one of our released sloths.

For the very first announcement of 2021, we have some exciting news!  Alicia is now FREE!

Some of you might remember that back in mid October, Alicia was electrocuted on her face and down the left side of her body.  Luckily, her skin wounds were pretty superficial but most were on her face which is a really painful location as it is covered in highly sensitive nerves.

When she arrived, she was shaking and in shock.  In addition to her skin wounds she also had a badly injured right eye.  Her skin healed in just a few short weeks but it took her eye much longer.

However, after 2 months of treatment and TLC we are happy to report that Alicia is finally back where she belongs!  In the jungle forest that she calls home.

It is a Happy New Year for Alicia after all!

Tammy is a large baby 3-fingered sloth. Probably about 4 months old when she was found. Separated from her mom or possibly weaned a little too early by her mom, Tammy was brought to TSI because she needed our help to finish growing! She arrived about 4 weeks ago and already in a month’s time she has gained 200g! She has now finished her quarantine phase and has been introduced to Lil’ Sebastian and Humpty Dumpty. The first couple of nights with her new friends, Tammy was shy and slept by herself, but now she has officially joined the cuddle pile and has made herself an integral part of this new Trio.

Stay tuned for more on Tammy as she continues to grow up and prepare for her life back in the wild!

You can symbolically adopt Tammy. Your donation will go towards the rehabilitation of sloths in our care, including Tammy.

Alan the three-fingered sloth

Alan is a male three-fingered sloth who was electrocuted. The electrocution killed most of the tissue on his left hand creating a huge wound that has been taking months to heal up. Alan has been battling against infection but he is finally on the road to recovery!

Alan has been the most aggressive three-fingered sloth that we have ever had at the Sloth Institute and we all dream of the day that he can be free again.

Send Alan your well wishes in the comments below and hopefully he will be released soon!

We are happy to announce that Wall-E is healthy and happy back in the wild!

“We released Wall-E in a great patch of forest,” explains head sloth tech Tom. “Other sloths are seen here inside of Parador (a resort in Manuel Antonio), and there are lots of different trees to feed on. Most importantly and he won’t run into people or power lines.” Wall-E came down to poop soon after release – that’s a really good sign! We watched him sky rocket into the canopy, ready to enjoy his best life.

Welcome three sloths who were recently found and in need of our TLC at The Sloth Institute.

Meet Jack! He is a two-fingered sloth we found without a mom. Since he’s an orphan, we’ll make sure he gets the care he needs.

Beautiful Aurora! She is a three-fingered sloth who we found had a fungal infection. We’re treating her now. We hope she heals quickly!

Hello Prince Eric! he is an adult three-fingered male sloth who fell onto a bridge and broke his arm. We took him for orthopedic surgery with Dr. Janet Sandi and her ortho surgeon. He has a pin in his arm and is healing well so far!
You can symbolically adopt our new arrivals and help with their care! Donate through our Adopt A Sloth Program and be part of our mission to rehabilitate sloths and return them to the wild where they belong.
