About Us

Our Mission

Is to enhance and expand the welfare and conservation of sloths.

We achieve this by taking a multifaceted 4-part approach to tackling the issues that put sloths in danger:
  1. RESCUE, REHABILITATE and RELEASE orphaned and injured sloths.
  2. RESEARCH of captive, wild, and recently released sloths including collaborations with conservationists and scientists around the world.
  3. EDUCATION to generate and disseminate responsible information about sloths to the general public and train local public servants on proper sloth information and rescue techniques.
  4. CONSERVATION programs that negate human encroachment issues impacting sloth’s welfare and habitat.

Our Passion

What Makes us Different

The Sloth Institute is not a sloth sanctuary.  TSI is a non-profit organization specializing in rescue, research and education with a particular focus on the behavior, health, and welfare of released, wild and captive sloths. Our sloths are not available to be seen by the public as it is in their best interest to have as little human contact as possible. If you are staying at Tulemar Resort and are interested in a nature walk to see WILD sloths then please contact your concierge to schedule.

Community

We provide educational workshops for the community and schools about how to safely and harmonically coexist with sloths.

Service

We provide professional internships and volunteering opportunities for conservationists, biologists, researchers, and zoologists seeking a better future for the rainforest.

Protect

We work with the government and private landowners to ensure that land is protected for sloths and sloth habitat is preserved for future generations.

Save

We rescue, rehabilitate, and release all of the sloths that come into our care. Our goal is to return all sloths back into the wild so they can continue to prosper as the amazing canopy-dwelling animals that they are!
